WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is named after its creator, Joseph Pilates, who developed this movement method in the 1920s. The series of movements focus on proper postural alignment and muscle balance as well as core strength and stability. Controlled breathing and activation of the deep core muscles are an integral part of the Pilates repertoire. The precise movements isolate and engage the muscles that need to be activated, so you only need to do a few repetitions of each exercise.

The main principles of Pilates are concentration, control, centering, flow, precision and breathing.

Matwork Pilates

In matwork Pilates you perform exercises on a mat on the floor, using your own body weight as the resistance in order to strengthen, lengthen and tone your muscles. It’s amazing what an effective workout you can have—just you on a mat! The key is learning how to properly activate your muscles while coordinating your breathing with the movements!

Hard work and fun...rolled into one!

Pilates accessories, such as a small ball, stretchy band, Pilates ring, light wooden pole and foam roller are often used in the sessions for variety and to make the movements easier or harder, depending on what is required.

Reformer Pilates

The Reformer is a versatile piece of Pilates equipment. It has a moving carriage on which you lie, sit or stand to perform the exercises. The spring-loaded tension of the machine creates resistance, which can be adjusted according to your ability level or the specific exercise you are doing. This enables you to work at the intensity level that is just right for you—creating an effective workout!

Using your hands or feet to engage the pulley system or foot bar, you tone and strengthen your body in a safe and controlled way. Not only are you working your arm or leg muscles, but your core muscles are simultaneously activated to stabilize your body, making it an efficient, whole-body workout!
